In-House Quality Control Laboratory
30+ Parameters Tested on Every Batch
B D Guar operates a dedicated in-house QC laboratory at our Kalol facility, staffed by qualified food scientists and chemists. Every batch of Guar Gum — food-grade, pharmaceutical-grade, or industrial — undergoes 30+ parameter testing before release. We do not rely on third-party labs for routine QC; results are available within 24 hours of batch completion.

Testing Categories
Guar Gum is a functional ingredient, so a certificate that only reports moisture and ash tells a buyer very little about how the powder will behave in their process. Our panel is built around function as much as composition: viscosity development, hydration speed, particle size and microbiological safety are measured on every lot, because those are the variables that decide whether a validated formulation still performs on the next delivery.
Rheological Testing
- Brookfield viscometer (RVT / DV-II+) for food, pharma and cosmetic grades
- Fann 35 viscometer for oil drilling grades
- Viscosity measured at 1% and 2% concentration
- Hydration rate (cP vs. time) curves for fast-hydrating grades
- Temperature-dependent viscosity profiles
Physical Analysis
- Moisture content by IR moisture analyzer (< 12%)
- Granulation and particle size distribution by Tyler mesh sieve analysis
- Bulk density
- Colour and appearance (visual plus colorimeter)
- Foreign matter screening
Chemical Analysis
- pH of 1% solution
- Ash content by muffle furnace (max 1.5%)
- Acid-insoluble residue
- Galactomannan content (minimum 80% for food grade)
- Protein / nitrogen content by Kjeldahl
Microbiological Testing
- Total plate count (TPC)
- Yeast and mould count
- E. coli, Salmonella and Staphylococcus — absent
- Coliforms
- Tested per IS 7553 and USP/NF for pharmaceutical grades
Residue & Contaminant Testing
- Ethylene oxide (ETO) residue to the EU LOQ of 0.1 mg/kg
- Heavy metals — lead, arsenic, cadmium, mercury — per EU limits
- Pesticide residue screening (APEDA panel)
- Aflatoxin B1 and total aflatoxins
Application-Specific Testing
- Drilling fluid performance to API 13A compliance
- Hydration rate curves for fast-hydrating grades
- Compatibility testing with specific food and cosmetic matrices
- Stability studies (accelerated ageing at 40°C / 75% RH)
Testing Equipment & Methods
Instruments are calibrated on a documented schedule against traceable standards, and every analyst works to a written standard operating procedure for each method below. Where a parameter demands instrumentation beyond our in-house scope — trace ETO confirmation in particular — we route the sample to an NABL-accredited partner laboratory and attach their report to the batch file.
| Equipment | Method | Parameters |
|---|---|---|
| Brookfield RVT Viscometer | ASTM D2196 | Viscosity (cP), hydration rate |
| Fann 35 Viscometer | API 13A | Drilling-grade performance |
| IR Moisture Analyzer | AACC 44-19 | Moisture % |
| Tyler Sieve Set | IS 7553 | Particle size distribution |
| Digital pH Meter | IS 7553 | pH (1% solution) |
| Muffle Furnace | IS 7553 | Ash content |
| Kjeldahl Apparatus | AOAC 954.01 | Protein / nitrogen |
| Autoclave + Incubator | IS 5402, USP | Microbial counts |
| GC-MS (outsourced for confirmation) | EU 2026/196 | ETO residue |
Certificate of Analysis (CoA)
Every shipment leaves Kalol with a batch-specific Certificate of Analysis. The CoA is generated from the actual laboratory record for that lot — not a generic specification sheet reprinted with a new date — so an incoming QC team can compare measured values directly against the agreed specification and release the material without re-testing.
Retained samples from each batch are held in our sample library so any query raised months after delivery can be investigated against the original material. Sample CoAs for any grade are available on request — useful when a purchasing or regulatory team needs to review the document format before placing a first order.
Quality Lab FAQs
Do you test every batch?
Yes. 100% of batches undergo full testing before release. No batch ships without a signed Certificate of Analysis from our QC team.
What viscosity measurement method do you use?
We use a Brookfield RVT viscometer at defined spindle speeds for food and cosmetic grades, and a Fann 35 viscometer for drilling-grade testing per API 13A specifications.
Can you test to custom specifications?
Yes. If your formulation requires testing at specific concentrations, temperatures, or for additional parameters beyond our standard panel, we accommodate custom testing protocols.
How do you test for ETO residue?
Initial screening is done in-house. Confirmation testing is performed via GC-MS at an accredited third-party laboratory, with results to the EU limit of quantification of 0.1 mg/kg per Regulation 2026/196.
Is your lab ISO 17025 accredited?
Our laboratory follows ISO 17025-aligned methods and procedures. Formal accreditation is in progress. For parameters requiring accredited results (e.g., ETO, heavy metals), we use NABL-accredited partner labs.
What is the shelf life of your guar gum?
Properly stored (cool, dry conditions below 25°C, away from moisture), HICOL guar gum has a shelf life of 24 months from the date of manufacture.
